Founder of RSKA


Shihan Rick Herbster is the Founder of RSKA and has been actively involved in the martial arts for 55+ years. He trained in Karate under O'Shihan Isaac Henry, Jr., Hanshi H. Robert Haag and Shihan James R. Henry and he trained in Judo under Sensei Ed Huyler and Sensei C. Scott Main.

On December 2, 2017 Shihan Herbster was promoted to the rank of Judan, Tenth Degree Black Belt, by Shihan J.H. Kim, with concurrences by Shihan Al Smith Jr., Grandmaster Art Beins, Shihan Alick Smith, III, Hanshi H. Robert Haag and Shihan Carroll Pegeron. In addition, he is ranked Rokudan, Sixth Degree Black Belt, in Japanese Jujitsu by the USJA Jujitsu Division under Sensei C. Scott Main and he continues his training in the RSKA Judo Program.

He has been an author for Black Belt Magazine and has written articles concerning the history of Wado-ryu karate and the life of Grandmaster Hironori Otsuka.

His outstanding career has included numerous awards and proclamations from community leaders, political officials, charitable organizations and fellow martial arts Masters and GrandmastersThe two awards that mean the most to him are the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award presented to him by the Upper Rank RSKA Masters and fellow Martial Arts Masters and Grandmasters on June 19, 2021, .

Shihan has coached and instructed RSKA students who have successfully competed at all levels from local karate tournaments to international martial arts events sponsored by USA Karate and the World Karate Federation (The governing body for Karate in the 2020 Summer Olympics).

He has trained many successful students to the level of Master and beyond. One of his most well-JDF BEING PROMOTEDknown students was Hanshi Jason David Frank. Hanshi Frank was an accomplished Ninth Degree Master and internationally recognized figure in the world of martial arts. In 1992, at the age of 19, Hanshi Frank was cast as “Tommy Oliver” in one of the most popular children’s television series ever to air, “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.” Hanshi Frank was the Director and Master Instructor of the RSKA schools in the Houston, Texas area.

In addition to Hanshi Jason David Frank, some of the more notable RSKA Black Belts and Masters include Shihan Carroll Pegeron, Hanshi George Downey, Kyoshi Darren Ross, Kyoshi Robert Torres, Kyoshi John Martin, Kyoshi Alex Alarcón, Kyoshi Richard Herbster, Master Sam Schenker and Toms River Police Chief, Master Mitch Little.

Shihan Rick Herbster is the Executive Director and Grandmaster at the RSKA Headquarters Dojo, located in Toms River, New Jersey.
