Hanshi George Downey has been actively involved in the martial arts for over 40+ years when he began training under Shihan Rick Herbster.
Even before reaching the rank of Black Belt, he began contributing his time and efforts to the development of Rising Sun Karate Academy and its students.
On July 22, 2023, Hanshi Downey was promoted to the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt or Hachidan in front of a board of over 25 martial arts Masters and Grandmasters from around the world.

One of his main goals is to now help to oversee the development of the younger, up and coming Black Belts and Instructors at RSKA. He believes that students who become instructors are not only setting an example for lower ranked students, but they also represent the dojo.
